As the collaboration between boutique hotelier Ian Schrager and Marriott Hotels advances into sophomore properties, Edition London proves the best opening to date within a landmark Fitzrovia property that's revitalized with Scharger's sense of style and Marriott's sense of affordable practicality. In a neighborhood familiar to Schrager, his former Sanderson is just up the road, Edition occupies the old Berners Hotel that's a listed 18th century building originally a row of Georgian-era townhouses. Today, visitors arrive to a glamorous reception that mixes more traditional elements like a reproduction tapestry with more modern wood paneled walls and plush upholstery. Elaborate plaster detailing hovers heavenly above the lobby bar with antique billiard table and black walnut décor with menu by Berners Tavern - the in-house eatery by Chef Jason Atherton of Pollen Street Social. Berner's mixes the regal style of a gentlemen's club with walls stacked in old oil paintings and vintage mirrors offering a new age spin on classic British cuisine.
The Room
Compact, entry-level rooms prove far larger in style with light, wide-plank wood floors that extend into wood-paneled walls with cantilevered shelving. Sheer curtains and indirect lighting endure from previous Schrager properties as well as baroque-framed mirrors and all-white tile bathrooms that have always left us a bit cold albeit with Le Labo bath products. Larger rooms offer more adornment from upholstered George Smith tufted lounge chairs to proper dining areas in larger suites. Those looking for the best room in the house should opt for the penthouse with its wrap-around terrace with views that stretch out over the City of London.
